County’s financial picture drawn

first_img Pinterest Ector County commissioners today will consult department heads about the 2021-22 budget and make long-range plans for the brightening post-pandemic age.Precinct 1 Commissioner Mike Gardner said Monday that increased economic activity this spring and possibly for the rest of fiscal 2020-21 may mean there will be money for employees’ raises and infrastructure improvements next year.Gardner said Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s early April denial of the City of Odessa’s bid to snag some of the county’s revenues from its new rural sales tax had bolstered his optimism. “Things will always be tight,” he said.“Mainly, we will have everybody get their costs together and see what we’re looking at. My property valuation is up 8 percent, so even if we don’t raise the tax rate at all, we will still have an increase. The sales tax is going along pretty well and my thought is that next year’s economy will be pretty good.”The commissioners budgeted for $12 million in sales tax revenues for the fiscal year that began last Oct. 1 after collecting $17.5 million during 2019-20, but they have said recently that the total may end up exceeding $14 million this year. The county’s current property tax rate is 36.9 cents per $100 in valuation. In other business in the 10 a.m. meeting at the 1010 E. Eighth St. administration building, the court will hear Texas Department of Transportation spokesman Gene Powell’s report on a TxDOT survey of Loop 338 and its road construction plans in the county. The court will also:>> Hear a presentation by Ector County Utility District President Tommy Ervin, who cut the ribbon May 20 on a desalination system at 5016 Johnson Road, in West Odessa that will remove pollutants from oilfield water.>> Consider appointing Precinct 3 Commissioner Don Stringer to the airport board that sets policy for Odessa-Schleymeyer Field operations.>> Consider a contract for the Austin law firm of Bickerstaff, Heath, Delgado and Acosta to start the process of political redistricting based on last year’s Census.>> Discuss extending the county health department’s contract with the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center at El Paso to Aug. 31, 2023.>> Consider a ground lease contract between the airport and the Patterson Rosedale Highway Co. of Bakersfield, Calif.>> Discuss contracts for the county clerk’s office with the Tyler Technologies Eagle Division of Plano for software services and Kofile Technologies of Dallas for the digitization of documents.>> Hear Human Resources Director Donna James’ proposal to hold a service awards luncheon that was postponed in February.>> Consider hiring a temporary clerical and data entry employee for James’s office. Future bright for England as youngsters beat USA on Rooney farewell

first_img“It has been a brilliant year no matter what happens on Sunday. We’ve had real shoots of progress and achieved some outstanding results,” said Southgate.“But everybody wants to get to a semi-final out of a very tough group so it would be a really big step forward.”As Rooney and Kane watched on from the bench for the first 45 minutes, Wilson was handed his chance to impress on his international debut, while Jadon Sancho was given his first start.England quickly put the game to bed with two goals in as many minutes midway through the first half as firstly Lingard received Dele Alli’s pass before curling high into the far corner.Sancho has quickly made a name for himself at Borussia Dortmund and the 18-year-old built on his fine Bundesliga form by teeing up Alexander-Arnold to drill his first international goal into the far corner. As planned, Rooney got the chance to add to his 53 international goals and was handed the captain’s armband one last time when he entered on 58 minutes. He didn’t get the fairytale ending as Brad Guzan made a fine save to the crowd’s dismay in stoppage time. However, Wilson did get his goal to cap a dream debut for the Bournemouth striker, who has battled through the lower leagues and two cruciate ligament injuries in both knees to make it to the international stage.Wilson got ahead of his marker to turn Fabian Delph’s cross in at the near post 13 minutes from time. Share on: WhatsApp London, United Kingdom | AFP | Wayne Rooney believes the future is bright for England as a youthful Three Lions eased past the United States 3-0 at Wembley on his international swansong on Thursday.Jesse Lingard, Trent Alexander-Arnold and debutant Callum Wilson grabbed the goals in a dominant England display despite Gareth Southgate fielding a very inexperienced side.Should England avenge their heartbreaking World Cup semi-final defeat by Croatia on Sunday at Wembley, Southgate’s men can build on the progress made by surpassing expectations in Russia this summer by qualifying for the semi-finals of the inaugural Nations League.“It’s my opinion that England are in very safe hands from what I’ve seen this week,” said Rooney.“The way they are being coached is brilliant, it’s a great group of young players who have a bright future.“They will go close to being the next team to bring a trophy back for England.”The decision to honour Rooney with a first cap for two years divided opinion. However, the biggest cheer of the night was reserved for the introduction of England’s greatest ever goalscorer just before the hour mark on his 120th international appearance.“It will live with me for a long time,” added Rooney.“It is something which created debate because it was the first time something like this happened, but it is the right thing to do for the players if you achieve and leave your mark on the England team.”England’s former captain was also honoured before kick-off with a guard of honour and the presentation of a plaque bearing a golden Three Lions badge by current skipper Harry Kane.“I asked Harry Kane to present me with the award because I believe he will beat my goalscoring record and I look forward to presenting him with the trophy,” added Rooney.Kane didn’t get the chance to add to his 19 international goals as Southgate prioritised keeping most of his key players fresh for Croatia’s visit on Sunday.last_img read more

Real Madrid draw Barcelona in Copa del Rey semis

first_imgSantiago Solari’s side will hope victories in the Copa del Rey can have a knock-on effect in the league, however, where Barca have been unflappable over the past two months, winning eight matches on the spin. The opener at the Camp Nou will present Madrid with a chance to avenge their 5-1 hammering there in October too, a result that led to Julen Lopetegui being sacked as coach. They reached the Copa del Rey semis after completing a 7-3 aggregate victory over Girona on Thursday while Barcelona pulled off a brilliant comeback to beat Sevilla, overturning a 2-0 first-leg deficit by winning 6-1 at the Camp Nou.Valencia continued their own resurgence by scoring two late goals to overcome Getafe on Tuesday and Real Betis needed extra time to knock out Espanyol. Each sitting on 29 points in La Liga, Valencia and Betis played out a goalless draw when they met at Mestalla in September and both will fancy their chances of making the final.Betis also have added motivation in this year’s competition after their own stadium, the Benito Villamarin, was confirmed as the venue for the final on May 25.“For everyone, and above all the fans, it would be an extraordinary way to finish the season,” Betis coach Quique Setien said earlier this week.“To play the final in your home stadium, on your home pitch, and with your fans in your own stands — we know half the city would be there to support.” FILE PHOTO: El Classico Madrid, Spain | AFP | Real Madrid will face defending champions Barcelona in the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey.The draw made on Friday means there will be back-to-back Clasicos, with the second leg due to take place in the last week of February, before Madrid host Barca in La Liga on March 2.The first leg will be played at the Camp Nou next week before a return at the Santiago Bernabeu. The provisional dates are February 6 and 27. Real Betis will go up against Valencia in the other semi-final.Barcelona are 10 points clear of Madrid in La Liga and will be favourites to progress but their opponents have found form in recent weeks, winning six of their last seven matches.Barcelona director Guillermo Amor said: “Real Madrid are playing well and they will be the Madrid team we always expect — a group of winners that competes for everything, that can give us a scare if we are not ready to work.”“There’s nothing like it,” Real Madrid director Emilio Butragueno said. “We are talking about two teams with a lot of resources, with extraordinary players and we always expect very tight games.“We trust our players but obviously this is one of the greatest games in the world today.”Barca are chasing a record fifth Copa del Rey success in a row while Madrid are into the last four for the first time since they won the competition in 2014.– Two Clasicos in a week –Two Clasico games in a week will crank up the pressure on both teams at the end of the month but Real also have a testing schedule around the first leg, sandwiched between a city derby against Atletico Madrid in La Liga and a Champions League last-16 first leg away to Ajax.center_img Share on: WhatsApplast_img read more
