€3M plan aims to reduce Letterkenny traffic jams

first_imgA new traffic management project for Letterkenny could see roundabouts being replaced and traffic lights installed in one of the town’s most problematic areas. The Polestar Roundabout and Ballyraine areas of Letterkenny have been identified as key areas in need of traffic lights under a larger council project, which has been estimated at €3M.‘Urgent advanced measures’ involve replacing the Ballyraine and Creamery roundabouts with traffic controlled junctions. Traffic lights would also be installed on the Polestar Roundabout together with other ancillary works. Chief Executive of Donegal County Council Seamus Neely said the preliminary appraisal for the Letterkenny Traffic Management project is currently being considered by the Department of Transport.Due to the high level of traffic congestion in Letterkenny, Mr Neely proposed that a subset of the overall project is carried out sooner at Ballyraine and the Polestar.Writing in the Chief Executive’s Management Report, Mr Neely said: “Traffic congestion in Letterkenny is increasing in regularity and frequently leads to long delays to traffic in the town.“This underlines a need for some urgent advance measures and in this context a subset of the overall project is now being proposed.” The advanced works will cost an estimated €500,000.€3M plan aims to reduce Letterkenny traffic jams was last modified: November 30th, 2019 by Rachel McLaughlinShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Infrastructure master plan ‘on track’

first_img24 February 2012 The Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Commission is making progress in drawing up South Africa’s infrastructure implementation master plan, which outlines the geographically-defined strategic projects announced earlier this month by President Jacob Zuma. The government is looking at spending R3.2-trillion in the next three years on over 40 major infrastructure projects. Cabinet spokesperson Jimmy Manyi told journalists on Thursday that the plan had been discussed during an ordinary Cabinet meeting in Cape Town this week.Geographically-defined strategic projects The geographically-defined strategic projects include a massive integrated rail, road and water infrastructure in Limpopo province, and improvement in the movement of goods between Durban, Free State and Gauteng. There are also moves to beef up the industrial and agricultural development and export capacity of the Eastern Cape and expand the province’s economic linkages with KwaZulu-Natal and the Northern Cape. In North West province, the plan highlights the need for the roll-out of water, roads, rail and electricity infrastructure, with 10 priority roads earmarked for upgrade. Improvements in the iron ore rail line between Sishen and Saldanha Bay in the Western Cape is expected to create a large number of jobs in the area.Rigorous feasibility assessments’ The National Treasury’s Budget Review for 2012/13, published on Wednesday, notes that not all of the R3.2-trillion projects under consideration will be approved for implementation. The government will choose the most cost-effective ones that offer optimal long-term benefits. “All public sector infrastructure projects will be subjected to rigorous assessment to determine their feasibility,” the Review states. The government is also of the view that the country’s public sector capacity to implement major projects is presently inadequate, and steps are being taken to strengthen planning and implementation capacity at all levels. In his Budget speech on Wednesday, Finance Minister Pravin Gordhan outlined a range of measures to boost planning and monitoring capacity in government departments and municipalities to ensure that they carry out major projects and allocate the necessary spending on them in an efficient way. International film productions boost South African economy, skills, says DTI

first_img24 February 2016More international film production should be encouraged in South Africa to strengthen the country’s economy, Trade and Industry Minister Rob Davies said at an event to publicise a current US television production in the country, the historical series Of Kings and Prophets.Minister Rob Davies at Of Kings & Prophets location, Stellenbosch. One of the production funded by the dti. pic.twitter.com/OzNWwRDOrr— Nelly Molokoane (@metlae1) September 10, 2015The rand-dollar exchange rate was a boon to foreign film production he said: “It means they have a huge advantage; it just makes it much cheaper for them.” But the minister was cautious to add that the training and experience for the local film production workforce, covering everything from acting to production and behind the scenes, was an immeasurable boost for the South African talent involved. Service providers and other industries also benefit from the investments.Since the introduction of its film incentive programme by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in 2004, 20% of preproduction and production spending by international film productions in South Africa had gone directly into the country and its workforce, the department said – even more if postproduction work (including using local visual effects and editing companies) was completed in South Africa. And the effects of this investment were being felt in all areas of the industry, according to a 2012 baseline report by Deloitte. It showed that the industry achieved an economic multiplier of 2.89 – for every rand spent in the industry, R1.89 was generated within the local economy. In total, since 2004, R15-billion has been invested in South Africa and its people.Boosting South African talentFilm and television production added R5-billion to Cape Town’s economy, according to the city, a city of choice for local and foreign film makers. More importantly, it added 35 000 new local jobs between 2011 and 2014. Productions include the Leonard DiCaprio hit Blood Diamond, Safe House starring Denzil Washington and, most recently, the acclaimed Mad Max: Fury Road.Johannesburg, not to be left out, has also enjoyed its fair share of Hollywood filmmaking glitz and financial boost as the backdrop to hit films such as District 9 and Chappie, a scene in the second Avengers movie and locals hits such as Jerusalema and Fanie Fourie’s Lobola.South African storiesOver the last five years, the local film industry – telling original South Africa stories for film and television for local and international markets – has grown exponentially. Directors, writers, actors and hands-on production staff are taking the lessons learned from working on international productions and using these to tell local stories and build the industry. In 2011 to 2013, the industry produced 25 films for theatre release, generating 11% of industry-wide box-office takings, or R98-million (about $6.4-million) of R879-million.During the first half of 2014, more than a dozen local films accounted for R33- million of the R382-million total box office gross. These films covered diverse genres and fortunes: action, drama, comedy, documentary and art house.Successful movies such as Anant Singh’s epic Long Walk to Freedom, the Spud trilogy, numerous Afrikaans-language box office hits and, most recently, the sleeper success of the romantic drama Ayanda, have all benefited from the development of the local film industry via large international input.Of Kings and ProphetsOf Kings and Prophets, a production by the American Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) said to rival the scope and success of other epics such as Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings, is currently filming in Cape Town. It is officially, according to the DTI, the largest production to be filmed in South Africa. Direct production spend by ABC is estimated at over R450-million, with R391-million of that expenditure qualifying for a 20% rebate for the South African government.According to the DTI factsheet accompanying Davies’ visit to the production, estimated direct and indirect tax revenue for the local economy is estimated to be R70-million.Almost all of the crew on the production are South African, according to ABC, covering everything from costume design to casting and set construction.Of Kings and Prophets film set in Western Cape is entirely built by South Africans https://t.co/XtG1DTtpFF pic.twitter.com/OhHmLrWSJm— BDlive (@BDliveSA) February 20, 2016Sets – interiors are in a Stellenbosch warehouse and exteriors are in Durbanville – are reputably some of the largest ever built in South Africa and were co-ordinated by a full South African workforce, headed by production design veteran Johnny Breedt. Breedt also worked on Long Walk To Freedom, Hotel Rwanda and the No.1 Ladies’ Detective Agency series.Of the 600 to 850 crew members working on the series, 50% were from “previously disadvantaged” groups, Davies said, including 26 South African trainees and film graduates in 12 production departments. Their training was provided by the local non-profit Film Industry Learner Mentorship (Film) programme and was financed by the DTI.A total of 829 local production vendors and service providers – including catering, manufacturing and hospitality assistance – have been used by the production. The series’ co-executive producer, Chris Brancato, praised the work ethic of the South African production team, highlighting the ethnic diversity of the crew, particularly in fulfilling various high-skill roles – something he called a rarity in Hollywood.Speaking to Business Day, Brancato said the assistance from the local industry and the government did not disappoint. Comparing the differences between the American and South African counterparts, he said seasoned Hollywood film industry members working on the Of Kings. production were incredibly impressed with the work ethic and skills level South Africans had shown, adding that it “is not a common response in Hollywood”.Another ABC production head, Gary French, reiterated the international film community’s enthusiasm for working in South Africa and with South Africa talent, telling Business Day’s Sue Blaine: “We couldn’t have done it without the South Africans who have come on to our show and become part of our family.”Of Kings and Prophets is the largest ABC production yet to be filmed in SA https://t.co/s22HlFShtb pic.twitter.com/vP22HBDPqM— BDlive (@BDliveSA) February 19, 2016*Of Kings and Prophets, starring Ray Winston, premieres on US television in March 2016 and locally on DSTV Edge later in the year.Source: Bizcommunity, Business Daylast_img read more

Backupify’s CEO On Wooing Investors: “It’s Like Dating”

first_imgWhy Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Here at ReadWriteStart, we’ve been following the Open Angel Forum closely as Jason Calacanis’ project moves from city to city bringing angel investors and worthy startups together in one room. The first event in Los Angeles was of particular success to Backupify, which provides backup for your online social network data, including Facebook, Twitter, Delicious, WordPress, Gmail, Basecamp and many other services. Following the event, the company raised a Series A round of $900,000 from Calacanis, Chris Sacca, First Round Capital and a few others.Earlier this week, CEO Rob May posted his take on the process of raising funding from VCs, which he likens to dating. According to May, pitching to VCs is not about forcing your idea down their throat and convincing them why they should invest in it; if a startup and a VC are meant to be, it will be more like love at first sight.“They either like you and your idea, or they don’t. It’s like dating because your goal in dating is not to convince someone who is a bad match for you that somehow you are really a good match. That’s a recipe for divorce,” says May. “It’s really about finding the person that is naturally a good match. Same way with investors.” One thing that May did much differently than other entrepreneurs seeking funding is that he approached investors without a business plan. While he doesn’t recommend this as a solution for every startup, he does find that in his case, not having a business plan did not really hinder his efforts.“I sat in front of VCs who thought I was crazy for not having a business plan. I was asked ‘how can you run your business if you don’t have a written plan?’,” says May. “I also sat in front of VCs who said ‘glad you didn’t waste time writing a plan, because we wouldn’t read it anyway.’ It’s really more of an art, not a science.”Another less standard practice May chose to include in his presentation at the Open Angel Forum was not a special slide on his pitch deck or a certain phrase; May drank a beer while presenting. Again, he doesn’t suggest this is a solution for everyone, but he uses it as an example of how to relax and “be yourself” when pitching to VCs. They are very experienced at talking to startups and any good VC knows how to spot when you are full of hot air, and they will call you on it.“It’s never easy, not even when you have a good idea. That’s the point. That’s why so few people ever do it,” says May. “If you want to learn to raise money, the best thing to do is go try to raise money.”Photo by Flickr user apol3. (Photo by Joe Robbins/Getty Images)Alabama quarterback Blake Sims put up stellar numbers (3,487 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 10 interceptions) in his lone year starting in Tuscaloosa. He also set the Crimson Tide record for single-game passing yardage.Still, his lack of prototypical size and background as a running back — where he played as a freshman at ‘Bama in 2011 — led to some speculation he would switch positions at the next level.Sims put that talk to rest last week, and this morning confirmed a report from yesterday that he had received an invite to the upcoming NFL Scouting Combine to showcase his throwing skills Invited! #blessedandthankfulA photo posted by Blake Sims (@_bsims6) on Jan 28, 2015 at 5:44am PST Despite his decorated final collegiate season, Sims didn’t produce sterling numbers at the Reese’ Senior Bowl last weekend, completing just 4-of-11 passes for 50 yards. He did add 23 yards rushing on three attempts. The 2015 NFL Scouting Combine will be held inside Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 17-23. Teammates making life easy for freshman goalkeeper

With a true freshman playing in goal for the Ohio State women’s soccer team (8-2-1, 2-0-0), an experienced defense and ‘no-shots’ approach has propelled the Buckeyes to the top of the Big Ten standings. Goalkeeper Rachel Middleman currently ranks second in the Big Ten in goals against average, letting in only .33 percent of shots. According to head coach Lori Walker, it’s the play of the defense in front of Middleman that has helped make the transition to collegiate ball trouble-free for the true freshman. “They’ve got a strong no-shot mentality and I think that helps make Rachel’s job a lot easier as a freshman,” Walker said. “I know that the saves that we’re going to ask her to make are going to either be simple saves or game-winning saves. There’s not going to be that kind of in-between thing where we really need to lean on her to be a difference-maker at this point, which is what you want from your freshmen.” The Buckeye defense is led by a trio of senior captains Cassie Dickerson, Lauren Beachy, and Danielle Scoliere. “Our defense is old and mature and we’ve played together for three years, so I just think we really know each other well,” Beachy said. “We have a ton of chemistry and stress a no-shot mentality. We just play together as hard as we can and we know what works for us.” That no-shot mentality has put the Buckeyes at the top of most Big Ten statistical categories, including goals allowed where they rank second with six, and goals against per game average where they rank third with .53. Of the Buckeye’s 11 games, six of them have been shutouts and only once have they given up more than one goal in a game. “That’s the biggest thing that we can contribute to the game, our hard work and our tough defense,” Dickerson said. “If we can shut them down, that gives our forwards a much greater chance. Usually the margin in the Big Ten wins is by a goal each game. We’re not going to win 3-0 or 4-0, it’s always going to be 1-0 or 2-1, so if we do our job it gives us a great chance to win.” Dickerson is a three-time captain for the Buckeyes and the second player in Ohio State women’s soccer history to be named to the Hermann Trophy watch list. The Hermann Trophy is awarded each season to the top male and female players in college soccer. “It’s something that I carry on my shoulders and take pride in,” Dickerson said. “It’s an honor to be a captain, so it’s just something that just comes out of me naturally and I think that when you have people who are willing to follow, it’s an easy role to do.” According to Beachy, help from the team’s offense has been a welcome addition this season. “Our offense is really clicking and that hasn’t always happened,” Beachy said. “As long as we keep those shutouts coming, I think that we always have a really good chance.” Both of the OSU’s Big Ten wins this season have come in shutouts, including a 2-0 win over Michigan and 1-0 overtime win against Penn State. The Buckeyes know that they’ll need to keep up their strong defensive pace to have success through the rest of the Big Ten schedule. “Our defense knows that a mistake that they make could really cost us and so while we don’t ask them to play perfect games, they do a great job of minimizing what those mistakes are that they make,” Walker said. “There’s a nice confidence and a nice aura about our backline, and so it’s just kind of contagious. So when they do make a mistake, they carry that weight and don’t just place it on one individual.” read more
