first_imgScriptwriter Salim Khan today stood in firm defence of his son Salman Khan as India’s goodwill ambassador for Rio Olympics, saying his son is not a sportsperson but takes keen interest in sports. While renowned chess player Vishwanath Anand said he saw nothing wrong with the appointment, wrestler Yogeshwar Dutt said the move was a PR-exercise for Khan’s wrestling-drama Sultan.Cricketer Gautam Gambhir too backed Dutt, saying he would have liked a sportsman as brand ambassador.Salim Khan took to Twitter to express his views on the issue. He also took potshots at sprint legend Milkha Singh, who has said that sports personalities like PT Usha should have been considered by the IOA instead of importing a person from Bollywood.”Milkhaji it is not Bollywood it is the Indian Film Industry and that too the largest in the world,” Salim Khan tweeted.”Salman Khan may not have competed but is an A level swimmer cyclist and weightlifter,” he further said.Despite all criticism, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has stood by its decision. IOA secretary general Rajeev Mehta has said that Khan was roped in to attract more public attention towards Olympic sports by cashing in on his massive popularity.  Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Hema Malini too backed the move saying, “That (2002 hit-and-run case) was one per cent of his life. For that you can’t lessen his popularity.
