A new scholarship for artists of Greek background

first_imgMulticultural Arts Victoria (MAV) has announced the inaugural Kleio Arts Scholarship 2017. The new scholarship was launched this week, offering career-making arts and professional development opportunities for emerging artists or cultural workers of Greek heritage. The scholarship was created as part of a partnership between MAV and Chapter Kleio No 15 Daughters of Penelope of Australasian Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA). The members of Chapter Kleio all have backgrounds or careers in the arts: in writing, film, fashion, photography, and performing arts. The chapter is dedicated to promoting the arts in Victoria and assisting emerging artists.Chapter Kleio selected MAV as the platform for the scholarship because MAV are an integral body dedicated to the development of culture and language, heritage, and cultural expression. The scholarship (worth $2,000) is open to all artists of Greek heritage who work in every art form including fashion, design, digital media, literature, music, theatre, screen, curatorial, and the visual arts. “As a community we need to inspire creative expression across all generations and ensure that art in all of its forms continues to play a vital role in driving diversity, social change, and harmony,” said Natalie Livaditis, Chapter Kleio’s spokesperson. “This is a leadership initiative that we hope will inspire other communities to develop similar support for the artistic development in their communities for young emerging artists,” said George Lekakis, Chair of MAV. Applications for the scholarship open on Monday 1 May and close on Sunday 30 July 2017. Guidelines and application forms are available at www.multiculturalarts.com.au.
