Will Consumers Accept Agricultural Innovation?

first_img SHARE Will Consumers Accept Agricultural Innovation? Home Indiana Agriculture News Will Consumers Accept Agricultural Innovation? Will Consumers Accept Agricultural InnovationCommodity Classic is all about innovation. The main reason many producers attend this annual event is to see what is new in agriculture. The massive trade show is packed with companies large and small showcasing their new products and technology for the farmer. But will the consumers who buy the food that is produced with this new technology accept it? Recently released research by Bayer indicates that consumers lack trust in science and technology in food production and found that U.S. consumers have serious concerns and reservations about the application of technology in food production. Only 31% said they believe that advances in agricultural production technology is safe. Over 75% said they feel the jury is still out on the safety of biotechnology and GMOs in food production. The Bayer research did, however, have some good news. Consumers still trust farmers. Close to 90% say they trust farmers on issues like food production, food safety, and world hunger. Fifty-eight percent said they would be willing to trust agricultural innovation if they knew more about it. Yet, communicating complex scientific and technical concepts to consumers is not easy. Kelly O’Halloran, who heads up Bayer’s AgVocacy program, stated, “You have to break it down into language and concept that is easy for them to understand and identify with. Take GMO seeds for example. You can describe it as a more modern form of plant breeding, something that has been around for a long time.” She also said you can talk about how biotechnology provides insulin for people with diabetes, “That is something most people can understand and identify with.”The Bayer AgVocacy program provides training to farmers on how to tell their story and talk to consumers about agricultural innovation. O’Halloran told HAT progress is being made, “Especially in the area of social media. We have seen a 20% shift in positive stories and comments about agriculture on social media channels.” As producers evaluate the new innovations on display at Commodity Classic, it will be vital that work continue to gain consumer trust of this technology and acceptance of the food it produces. “Dancing With The Stars” Pro Emma Slater Excited for O.C. Show on May 11

first_imgEmma Slater and former New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings celebrate their 2017 championship on “Dancing With the Stars.” (Photo credit: ABC)  By Tim KellyIn the highly competitive worlds of ballroom dancing, theater, film and television, Emma Slater has thrived. Her will to compete will be in evidence May 11 in Ocean City, even though the show Slater will headline then, “Ballroom With a Twist” won’t have judges or a scoreboard.“I’m a very competitive person,” allowed Slater, a professional choreographer and dancer and the “Dancing With the Stars” 2017 champion. “It’s not like I want to go out and try to outdo the other dancers,” she continued. “We’re all great friends. I do want to represent (DWTS) in a way that reflects what has made it (so popular).”“Ballroom With a Twist” is a smash hit touring stage production that brings together Slater with DWTS castmate Tristan McManus and dancers from “So You Think You Can Dance?” as well as vocalists from “American Idol” in a mash-up of some of the most successful network entertainment reality shows. It makes a stop in Ocean City at the historic Music Pier on Saturday, May 11, at 7:30 p.m.Tickets, ranging in price from $25 to $40 are available by calling 609-399-6111 or by visiting http://www.ocnj.us/boxoffice/ or at the website www.oceancityvacation.com/boxoffice.It’s a rare chance for fans used to seeing Slater on TV paired with a celebrity partner, as she was with former New York Giants running back Rashad Jennings to win the 2017 DWTS title, up close and live.  Emma Slater performs a dance routine with Drew Scott of the HGTV show “Property Brothers.” (Photo credit: ABC)“Ballroom With a Twist” showcases the moves of samba, waltz, foxtrot, quickstep, jive along with the hit songs performed by the “Idol” vocalists. The show represents the latest steps in the 30-year-old Slater’s rapidly and still ascending career path. She has been in formal dance training since the age of 10, and won a string of ballroom competition titles en route to earning a Top 10 world ranking and representing her native United Kingdom in international competitions. In 2008, she was a featured dancer in the film “Mama Mia” starring Meryl Streep and Pierce Brosnan and sang on its Grammy-nominated soundtrack album. In live theater, she performed in the hit shows “Simply Ballroom,” “Dirty Dancing” and “Burn the Floor,” which included an extended run on Broadway and a world tour of seven countries.Despite such a well-rounded resume, “Dancing With the Stars” is what made Slater herself a star. She joined the show as a troupe dancer in 2012, and three years later was named as one of the professional dancers for the show’s 17th season.“That’s the usual route (to earning a starring spot on the show),” Slater said during a phone interview with OCNJDaily.com. That period was also notable because Slater choreographed the opening numbers for each of the shows and did partner work with male troupe dancer Sasha Farber, whom she dated for years and married in 2018 following Farber’s on-air proposal.“On our show you must constantly come up with new things and re-invent yourself,” said Slater, who referenced the show’s staying power in the ratings and with its loyal fanbase.Rashad Jennings, former New York Giants running back, and Emma Slater, 2017 Dancing With the Stars champions. (Photo Credit: ABC)Slater’s latest re-invention includes a move one might not expect. “I just earned my real estate license,” she said, noting her spouse had done the same. One of her celebrity partners, Drew Scott of the HGTV show “Property Brothers” with whom Slater finished fourth in season 25, may have planted the seed.“I’m living in one of the top real estate markets of the world,” Slater said of her Beverly Hills address. “We’re having some great experiences, and we might try to develop a real estate show of some kind.”Over the years she’s been paired with a diverse group of celebrity partners, including actor-comedian Bill Engvall, former presidential candidate Rick Perry, actor Billy Dee Williams, ex-NASCAR race car driver Michael Waltrip, former baseball player Johnny Damon and ex-“Dukes of Hazzard” star John Schneider. In the process, she developed her own star power and became one of the more popular professional dancers to appear on the show.“I kind of developed into the professional who seemed to be paired with the celebrities who were either older or not considered to have a real chance to win,” she said. “It never that I thought I couldn’t win, I thought I wouldn’t win.”That changed when she was paired with the young and athletic Jennings to win her first DWTS title.  So where does she keep the famed mirror ball trophy?“It’s in a spot in our dining room where you can see it from any angle,” she noted. And does the highly-competitive Emma ever needle her spouse that Sasha has yet to pick up a DWTS crown of his own?“Never,” the suddenly non-competitive star said. “I look at it as we both won it. What’s mine is yours, what’s yours is mine. When he does win, I will consider it my victory, too.”Emma Slater married dance pro Sasha Farber after partnering with him on the hit ABC show “Dancing With the Stars.” (Photo Credit: BBC)last_img read more

Board of Realtors, OCNJ CARE Partner to Help Community

first_imgA gift card drive to help those struggling will also give local merchants a boost. By MADDY VITALEDuring the holidays and year-round there are people in need. During the COVID-19 pandemic more people are facing difficult times, job losses and other hardships. So, the Ocean City Board of Realtors decided to do something that would provide an array of services, products and food to the people who need it most by way of gift cards from local merchants and OCNJ CARE, a non-profit organization that raises funds, identifies those in need and delivers aid where needed in the community.“It really is a win-win for our local families and merchants,” local real estate agent Gloria Votta explained in an interview. As chairwoman of the Board of Realtors’ Community Services Committee, Votta said that it is a way to help those in need and also support downtown and Boardwalk store owners and eateries.“Please consider purchasing a gift card from your favorite store, restaurant or Boardwalk spot. We encourage our fellow realtors’ friends and neighbors to help make this holiday season,” she noted. The gift card drive for the December Community Service Project of the board replaces the annual Toys for Tots collection.Votta said the toy collection was canceled because of the pandemic. Instead of toys, people will receive items that they need, and they can still purchase toys with gift cards.“They can go to local shops to buy toys for their children,” Votta added. The Ocean City Board of Realtors office is located at 405 22nd Street.President of the Downtown Merchants Association Danielle Guerriero called it a wonderful event.“It is a great way to bring the community together to help others and support local businesses in the area,” she said. “I absolutely love the idea.”The gift cards may be purchased by members of the community through Dec. 20. The gift cards can be dropped off at the Board of Realtors office. Then, OCNJ CARE will deliver the gift cards to the families who need them, explained Drew Fasy, chairman of the organization.“A lot of our clients are families and seniors. On the holidays they can use the gift cards to buy what they need,” Fasy emphasized. “Our role is the distribution of the gift cards. We have a database of families in need. It will include some people in the Ocean City Housing Authority and families we have been made aware of who have been struggling.”Fasy added that the idea of gift cards makes sense during the pandemic.“Everybody is feeling the pinch. We are a local organization and we want to help out. We were happy to join with the Board of Realtors for this drive,” he said. “Rather than a toy drive, we would rather that you go to Boardwalk and downtown stores so that everyone on the island can benefit.”Donations may be dropped off at the Ocean City Board of Realtors at 405 22nd Street. (Office hours are Monday-Friday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.) The office is closed this Friday.Gift cards from a host of local shops can be purchased by people to donate to the cause. Lost Beatles Recording Found 52 Years Later

first_imgA family was recently cleaning out their attic when they stumbled upon a 7-inch vinyl of the only known recording for “It’s For You” sung by Sir Paul McCartney. The song was co-penned by McCartney and John Lennon in 1964 for their dear friend and English singer Cilla Black. The voices were tracked separately, with McCartney sending his demo to Black for reference. The demo was apparently lost forever, until Black’s family found the 7-inch Dick James demo disc in a brown paper envelope a solid 52 years later. It is now being put up for auction, and is expected to go for £15,000 and £20,000. Wow! You can listen to Black’s version of the song, “It’s For You,” which earned itself No.7 in the UK during its release in July of 1964.[via CoS]last_img
